Earlier this week most members of a Food and Drug Administration medical advisory committee reported that the side effects of Avandia increase the risk of heart attack when compared to older drugs, yet a majority of the committee voted to allow GlaxoSmithKline’s diabetes drug to remain the market. The FDA advisory panel met for two days, pouring over numerous studies that highlighted the risk of Avandia causing heart problems so that recommendations could be made whether the agency should issue an Avandia recall or take other steps to protect consumers. Avandia has come under harsh criticism in recent months by a number of experts, including FDA drug safety reviewers, who have estimated that Avandia may be responsible for more than 100,000 heart attacks and deaths since it was approved. Critics have argued that Avandia should be [...] Read more »

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has repeatedly showed that it will go to any lengths to keep its dangerous diabetes drug Avandia on the market, and more evidence of its unethical and immoral conduct has just emerged. This time, the facts show that GSK was not alone in its efforts to mislead both federal regulators and patients who believed that Avandia would provide a safe and effective treatment for their diabetes. This time, GSK had lots of help from its friends in respected scientific and medical positions. The problems for Avandia users began when the drug first came on the market in the late 1990s. Back then, some researchers expressed strong concerns that Avandia posed an increased risk of severe personal injuries and wrongful death from heart attacks and other heart problems. GSK responded by threatening some [...] Read more »

This story might seem amusing, if it were not frightening. More than anything, it’s an indication of the power of Direct-To-Consumer Advertising (DTCA) for prescription medications. These are the ads that always end with “Ask your doctor about…”, and drug companies spend billions on them every year.In 2008, the drug companies spent $4.34 billion on this type of advertising, and one study found that every $1 the pharmaceutical industry spends on DTCA yields an additional $2.20 in drug sales. That’s an excellent Return On Investment (ROI), but the drug companies would like us to believe that their only reason for advertising is to keep the customer healthy. The website of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) actually contains this laughable description of DTCA advertising: “DTC advertising increases people’s awareness of disease and available [...] Read more »

When a business chooses to operate outside the law and with arrogant disregard for the health of its customers, those unethical choices will eventually catch up with the company. That’s what’s happening now with Allergan and its paralyzing cosmetic, Botox. For years I’ve been writing about the dangers of Botox and the marketing practices of Allergan. A major lawsuit against the company has always seemed inevitable, so you can put this one in the “I Told You So” category. Ever since Allergan realized that Botox could earn huge profits, the pharmaceutical giant has been using a business model that treats FDA regulations and patient safety as nothing but minor obstacles on its road to even bigger sales. Instead of following the rules and making patient safety its top priority, Allergan has done everything within its [...] Read more »

Tardive Dyskinesia is a destructive condition that causes its victims to suffer involuntary muscle movements such as grimacing, contortions of the mouth, protrusions of the tongue, smacking of the lips, and puckering of the mouth.Tardive Dyskinesia has become a common problem, but it never occurs naturally. Instead, it’s one of the many horrible consequences of a group of drugs called dopamine antagonists, or antipsychotics, which are used as treatment for schizophrenia and other mental health issues. Although doctors no longer use Reglan (metoclopramide) to treat mental illnesses, it’s one antipsychotic that frequently causes Tardive Dyskinesia. Developed in the 1960s in Europe and approved by the FDA in 1979, Reglan was a disaster in treating mental health issues, but it has found use as a treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as GERD. GERD is [...] Read more »

The FDA’s system for approving drugs is fatally flawed. So is the process that the FDA uses to make vital information about approved drugs available to doctors. As a result of these two broken approaches, every year thousands of Americans suffer serious personal injuries and wrongful deaths from the side effects of prescription medications. The biggest and most obvious problem with the system is that it lacks impartiality. Many consumers probably believe that some branch of the United States government conducts thorough, rigorous, and unbiased tests on every drug before granting approval, but that’s not how the system works. Instead, pharmaceutical companies do their own testing on their own products, and they then submit their results to their friends at the FDA. As the track record for this system clearly shows, many drugs that should [...] Read more »

Vyvanse is an amphetamine commonly prescribed to treat both children and adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which are labels given to people who daydream and whose minds sometimes wander. Because of the personal injuries and wrongful deaths that amphetamines cause, Public Citizen has given Vyvanse its Do Not Use designation. That warning means that a drug is very dangerous and that it’s no better at treating the conditions for which doctors prescribe it than other drugs are. The basic danger with Vyvanse is that it’s an amphetamine known either as dextroamphetamine or dexedrine. Amphetamines are synthetic stimulants that are structurally similar to adrenaline, the hormone that the body produces when it’s either excited or scared. Athletes “get the adrenaline flowing” during competition, and it aids in focus and [...] Read more »

As we have stressed before, Avandia (rosiglitazone) is a dangerous diabetes drug that the FDA should have pulled it from the market a decade ago. A recent report from the Senate Finance Committee has revealed that Avandia has been responsible for more than 83,000 heart attacks and thousands of personal injuries and wrongful deaths, and the carnage continues.Avandia, which had sales of $3.4 billion in 2006, carries the absolutely worthless “FDA approved” label, and Avandia victims in the United States now suffer an estimated 500 heart attacks and 300 cases of heart failure every month. That record of death and destruction is clear evidence that the only reason why diabetes patients still have access to the drug is that GlaxoSmithKilne (GSK), the manufacturer, has good friends at the FDA. The story of Avandia shows everything [...] Read more »

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a deadly brain infection associated with the powerful cancer drug Rituximab, marketed as Rituxan, which is approved by the FDA for the treatment of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. In October 2009, the FDA announced the third wrongful death attributed to Rituxan, but other sources put the actual number of deaths and personal injuries at higher numbers. DrugLib.com compiles statistics and information on the benefits and dangers of prescription medications attributed 113 wrongful deaths to Rituxan during the calendar year 2007. PML was just one of the causes of death associated with Rituxan, as well as personal injuries: blindness, lung disease, and gastrointestinal ulcer. Patients receive Rituxan through IV infusion, and many have had adverse reactions to the injection. Those reactions have resulted in severe dizziness, weakness, nausea, fever, chills, muscle pain, and [...] Read more »

On December 12, 2009 the New York Times reported on page one “Poor Children Likelier to Get Antipsychotics.” Kudos to Duff Wilson and the New York Times for making this issue page one news. In June 2009 I wrote “Drugging Children for Profit.” Anyone who had read as many medical records of personal injuries cannot be taken aback by the huge numbers of children being dosed with behavior altering drugs. That has grinded on me for years and I am very pleased the New York Times has made this a front page national issue. A girl who cannot read a book in one sitting is given a drug to help her focus. An enthusiastic boy who blurts out answers before the teacher finishes asking the question requires medication to correct the problem. These behaviors and [...] Read more »
