According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a child in the U.S. goes missing every 40 seconds. To help parents prepare for that ultimate nightmare, the FBI has released a free iPhone app called Child ID. Two features built into the Child ID app can help parents react quickly and accurately if their child suddenly goes missing, says the FBI. First, parents can store on their iPhones recent pictures of their children along with vital statistics: age, height, weight, distinguishing marks, and so on. If a child goes missing—say, at a shopping mall or an amusement park—parents can summon help from dedicated links to 911 and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Once law enforcement arrives on the scene, parents will have, [...] Read more »

Adopting a child should be a rewarding challenge, and for Mamie and Mark Johnson, that’s exactly what they enjoyed as they adopted 5 children and created a happy and cohesive family. But when Mamie and Mark agreed to adopt their sixth, their rewards quickly changed to frustration and anger as their new child proved to be disruptive, destructive, and dangerous. The Johnsons did nothing to cause their only negative experience with adoption. They’re an amazing couple, and they’re strong advocates for adopting children from difficult backgrounds, which is exactly what they’ve done. All of the Johnsons’ adoptive children were born addicted, and all of them spent the first weeks of their lives going through withdrawal. Despite those horrible circumstances, the Johnsons were able to build a strong and loving family. All was excellent in the [...] Read more »

A new president should bring hope for a better economic future, but the Dow Jones average has been dropping steadily since the day after Barack Obama’s election in November. On November 5, a day when the excitement of a new administration coming to Washington should have given the market a big boost, the average fell from 9,616 to 9,139. On inauguration day, January 20, the Dow took a dive from 8,279 to 7,949. From Monday, February 17, the first day the markets were open after the passage of the stimulus package, through the closing bell on March 4, the Dow fell from 7845 to 6875.In the three months since the election, investors are scared and the market has lost 29% of its value. That’s a clear vote of no confidence in the new administration’s economic [...] Read more »

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as The Stimulus Package, is a step in the right direction, but it is not a bold, comprehensive plan to stimulate our economy across-the-board. We can do better. We need to do better.Americans want bold and decisive action. Living in fear is what people in other countries do. President Theodore Roosevelt captured our collective spirit when he said, “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure… than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” When President Obama signed the stimulus package into law, the stock market fell three hundred points. That cold reaction is what the plan has been receiving [...] Read more »

Stave off a massive recession and crippling unemployment by enacting 100% write-offs for all capital goods purchased in 2009: cars, trucks, machinery, tools, etc., not just “equipment.” Buy a car and write it off in 2009. Detroit will love it. Buy anything and manufacturers across America will love it. Why 100%?In 2008 Intl¹ Revenue Code §179(b) gave businesses 50% first year depreciation for equipment purchases, capped at $250,000. It didn¹t work. Too little, too late. The problem now? H.R. 1 extends the 2008 plan that didn¹t work well to 2009. See H.R. 1 §1402 and §1202 in the Senate bill. Fix it now: create blow-out demand for all manufacturing with 100% write-offs for all capital goods in 2009, generating manufacturing jobs across the country, including Fort Myers and Elkhart. Include the owners of 32 million apartments [...] Read more »

It’s disgusting. President Bush and his friends have repeatedly obstructed efforts to expand medical provisions to the poor, specifically blocking SCHIP legislation and holding state governments hostage. As noted recently in the New York Times, time and time again, states have attempted to expand medical insurance to kids. But because states are at the mercy of the federal government on Medicaid funding, the Bush White House has flexed its muscle on restricting efforts to expand coverage. A Bush spokesman, Tony Fratto, says in the article, “This policy demonstrates the president’s compassion. He wants to direct scarce tax dollars to those with the greatest needs.” No he doesn’t. He wants to strangle all medical coverage programs to appease his wealthy allies while leaving poor families behind. If Santa Clara County can provide for 98 percent of [...] Read more »

Trust-busting president Teddy Roosevelt railed against the fat cats of his time. So did Louisiana Governor and U.S. Senator Huey Long, as flawed as he was. We need people like that in office today, because the fat cats are still fat and getting fatter – often at the expense of the handicapped, the mentally retarded, children and others who are dispossessed. Our campaign system is skewed toward the wealthy. Corporate money flows into the election coffers of politicians, like wine into a wino. They’re drunk on it. And while they insist it doesn’t affect their decisions, it does buy a donor access. And that can often lead to incredible government subsidies for their interests. A public official always will meet with someone who kept his or her political career alive. It’s unfair to the rest [...] Read more »

Some will argue there is a big difference between the totalitarian government of the Chinese and the current Bush Administration. The current Bush administration is decidedly authoritarian and acts very much like the Chinese government in many ways. The Chinese torture political prisoners; the Bush Administration tortures political prisoners. The Chinese are not bound by Constitutional principles; the Bush Administration does not see itself bound by Constitutional principles. The Chinese run an oppressive political machine that squelches free speech; the Bush-Rove operation has attempted to do likewise. The Chinese spy on their citizens; the Bush Administration spies on its citizens and supports the wholesale investigation of telephone records, without a warrant or respecting existing statutory safeguards. Both governments use the ruse of national security to justify their actions. If you have been thinking [...] Read more »
