Image for Hwy 17′s Deadly Laurel Curve May Get Median Barrier

After the latest fatality on Highway 17, Caltrans will speed up a safety study on Highway 17 to extend a median barrier at Laurel Curve. The California Highway Patrol had repeatedly requested the barrier be extended. “We’ll consider all options,” Caltrans spokesman Colin Jones said Monday. “Everything is on the table.” CalTrans has recently began to look again at what further safety improvements can be made at the sharp curve, which ranks as the most dangerous stretch of this mountain highway from Los Gatos to Santa Cruz. Despite a one-third reduction in crashes over the past decade after the spending of more than $100 million for roadway upgrades, increased police patrols and a public-relations campaign, crashes have soared at Laurel. “The injury collisions there are horrific, because they often are head-on,” CHP spokeswoman Sarah Jackson [...] Read more »

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall of 2011-2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid cars. More than 14,700 of the Hyundai hybrid vehicles are affected by this recall but Hyundai doesn’t want to tell you about the rear center seat belts which fail to meet federal safety standards. Hyundai believes it doesn’t need to fix the seat belt issue with all Sonata hybrids—or notify all affected Sonata owner, as required by the usual federal safety recall procedures. The issue, says NHTSA, affects Hyundai Sonata Hybrids manufactured since December 2010. The federal safety agency claims both the lap and shoulder portions of the rear center seat belts disconnect when occupants press the 3-point safety belt’s unlock mechanism—a violation of safety standards. Hyundai claims it will fix the rear center seat belt issue in the approximately 1,633 new [...] Read more »

Nissan Motor Co. announced the recall of nearly 34,000 Sentra compact cars because of a battery cable problem that could cause the engines to stall. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents say that a zinc coating on the cable bolts could be too thick which could cause a voltage drop that can damage the engine control computer. The documents say the cars can stall while moving and it may not be possible to restart them, increasing the risk of a crash. The problem affects 2010 and 2011 Sentras equipped with MR-20 engines that were built from May 11, 2010, to May 22, 2010, and from July 8, 2010, to Oct. 25, 2010, according to the NHTSA documents. Nissan says it will replace the positive battery cables and covers free of charge starting on or before [...] Read more »
